LAGOS STATE CARBON CREDIT AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

A strategic concept for enhancing sustainable national development and poverty reduction in Nigeria.

The National Carbon Credit Train was officially flagged off on the 5th of June 2010 in Abuja, by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey (with the support of the Minister of Interior, Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Wogu and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Senator Grace Bent.

The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Environment is embarking on a nationwide campaign on the economic benefits in Climate Change (The National Carbon Credit Train). The ‘TRAIN’ which was recently flagged off as part of the activities to mark the 2010 World Environment Day celebration in Abuja, will run through the 36 States of the Federation.

This project strategy of addressing carbon credit is aimed at multiple stakeholders groups from the rural and urban poor to policy-makers and managers in the public and private sectors to help them better understand the nature and benefits of climate change for developing countries and the forms of mitigation and adaptation which are possible in their specific contexts.

You are hereby invited to the Lagos State Carbon Credit Awareness Campaign scheduled to take place in the nation’s commercial capital, at the Lagos Television (LTV) Multi-purpose Hall, Ikeja, Lagos.

The project aims to effectively and widely disseminate information on Carbon Credit and climate change, not only to vulnerable groups but also to local authorities, governments, business people, farmers, and other stakeholders who will inform the debate and response to Nigeria’s climate change challenge.

As African Ministers of Environment (AMCEN) noted, information on climate change is often full of technical jargon that needs translating into everyday terms if ordinary people are to understand and use it. The project will address this concern by using formal, informal, local, grassroots and traditional methods to disseminate the information on carbon credit to target constituencies.

His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola will formally kick off the Lagos State Carbon Credit Awareness Campaign, while the Honourable

Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey will officially present the National Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Guideline to the nation.
